Contemporary artist Sara Richardson

Thomas Edison & Other Thoughts

An important (and defining) characteristic I have as an artist is that I am constantly developing techniques and pushing mediums to do things in new experimental ways. It means I can have a lot of flops…sometimes this can get to me, meaning I have to be really resilient and focus on the successful end result not so much the ‘wreckage’ along the way.

Oddly, there is a quote from Thomas Edison that early on in my life meant a lot to me. I know this has to be a little bit funny…a contemporary artist finding a connection to something an inventor said long ago, but it makes perfect sense:

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

The photo shown above is of a painting in progress that is the result of test after test after test. I want areas in the piece to fall back and parts of the expressive white strokes to sing and vibrate. It’s almost there.
